Breakdown of Alcohol Leading to Acetaldehyde Toxicity

Normally, acetaldehyde is quickly broken down into harmless acetic acid by another enzyme, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. However, if we drink too much alcohol too quickly, acetaldehyde can build up in our system because our body cannot process it fast enough. This buildup of acetaldehyde is what causes many of the unpleasant symptoms of a hangover.

When we drink alcohol, it attaches to GABA receptors in our brain, activating GABA-related activity. This increased activity makes us feel calm and relaxed while drinking. Summary of a Clinical Human Trial from the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform of the World Health Organization (WHO)

In a randomized, controlled, crossover trial registered with the World Health Organization (WHO), researchers studied the effects of Hovenia dulcis extract on alcohol metabolism and hangover symptoms. Twenty-six adult males were recruited, divided into two groups, and subjected to alcohol consumption. The group that took Hovenia dulcis extract reported better well-being 12 hours after drinking compared to the placebo group, demonstrating a positive impact on hangover symptoms and blood acetaldehyde levels.10 Despite some limitations in this study, the results demonstrate that DHM is an effective supplement for significantly reducing hangover symptoms.
